San Clemente, Orange County
Ole Hanson, a former mayor of Seattle, founded San Clemente in 1925 as a Spanish village by the sea and required white stucco walls and red tile roofs on every building. His own bluff-top home, Casa Romantica, is now a cultural center and garden. In the 1970s the town drew national attention when Richard Nixon used an estate here as his Western White House.
